Overview of Program
The mission of the Katy Independent School District library media centers is to educate all students to successfully navigate the information age of the twenty-first century empowering them to be proficient life-long learners.
To ensure this mission, library media specialists, administrators, teachers, parents, and the community must collaborate to:
· Provide access to current and relevant resources in multiple formats through an instructional program that is integrated with the classroom
· Ensure that all students, employing a plethora of informational resources, can proficiently locate, access, integrate, evaluate, and communicate information, and
· Maintain a learning environment that stimulates and enriches an appreciation of literature, intellectual freedom, social responsibility, and life-long learning
Hours of Service
Students are welcome to use the library between
8:00 am- 3:20 pm Monday through Friday during the school year.
The Collection
The library collection consists of books (print and eBook formats) for students, as well as, DVDs, CDs, kits, and equipment for teacher’s use. The MJE library also subscribes to a wide selection of periodicals and online databases.
Student Circulation
Students may checkout books during the instructional day. The books circulate for a one week period and may be renewed if more time is needed. Each student needs to present his/her ID badge when checking out. Since our circulation is computerized, showing an ID ensures that all materials are being checked out to the correct patron. Students with late books or fines will not be able to checkout until their fine is paid or late books are returned.
Kindergarten- 1 book at a time
1st-5th grades- 2 books at a time
Overdue and Damaged Materials
Overdue notices are sent to the homeroom teacher weekly and take home notices are sent frequently. Overdue fines are not charged; however, lost or damaged materials must be paid for to clear the student’s library account. The damaged item will then be disposed of as per Katy ISD’s property disposal procedures. If a lost book is found and in good condition, it may be returned to the MJE library for a refund from Katy ISD.
If a student has lost a library book or damaged a book beyond repair, the student will be asked to pay the replacement value of the book. We are sometimes asked why parents cannot purchase a replacement from a bookstore where the prices are less expensive, each book bought for a KISD library are library bound quality and intended for numerous circulations. Vendors also charge a fee for the processing and cataloging of the books so that they are shelf ready.
Only students with clear library accounts are allowed to check out books.
Instruction and Research
The library media specialist meets with each class to teach library skills, literature enrichment, and digital citizenship. Students are welcome to come to the library from 8 am to 3:20 pm to check out materials and use reference materials.
Reading Incentive Programs
The library staff sponsors many reading incentive programs. Most of the programs are promoted school wide, while some are specifically designed for certain grade levels. Our school wide reading incentive program is called Jaguar Readers. The objectives of these reading programs are to develop a proficiency in using library resources, and to foster life-long reading and learning. All students are encouraged to participate in these programs but it is not mandatory. You may obtain more information about the Jaguar Readers program on the library website/blog.
